THE EAST OF EDEN MEDIEVAL EARRINGS:
For the woman who will not be commanded! Inspired by the Middle Eastern goddess/demoness Lilith.

Cross earrings outlined in soft, medium-toned gray. Matches several other pieces which combine into the East of Eden Medieval outfit, (which can be purchased in singular installations, or as a bundle). Will transform any plain outfit into something suddenly stylish. No detectable errors.

:: LEGEND ::

Lilith, in Judeo-Christian lore, was Adam's first wife, (not Eve 1 OR Eve 2 -- the more familiar Eve). Adam refused to "lay" with Lilith in any position which would allow her sexual dominance (or even equality), and so, when she had had enough subjection, Lilith finally rejected Adam and fled the Garden of Eden -- travelling East.

Eventually, she came to rest upon the shores of the Red Sea, where countless lascivious demons dwelled, and took up residence within an empty cave there. God, later hearing Adam's complaints of lonliness, sent two of his messenger spirits (angels) to seek out Lilith and request that she return to Eden. She denied God's request and angered the spirits, who threateningly demanded her obedience. But she would not relent. The angels warned her that God had decreed that, if she would not return of her own choosing, then He would punish her with the death of 100 of her own offspring -- the "lilim" -- every day!

Of course, given that these were HER BABIES now being threatened, like any mother, Lilith was absolutely infuriated. As the consort of demons, since arriving upon the Red Sea, Lilith did not fear these angellic spirits, and would not fear God either! She was ready for war, if He should bring it.

With bloodlust rising in her throat, Lilith spat that for every child of hers who was taken, a human child would die. The angels told Lilith that she must not do this awful thing and they threatened to drown her, but Lilith was out of patience. And so a deal was made between the messenger spirits (Senoy, Sansenoy and Semangelof) and Lilith: If the names of these three spirits were written above the bed of a human newborn, that child would be protected from her wrath, and she would not strangle it in it's sleep. In exchange for this promise, she demanded the angels share with her the secret of flight -- and so they gave it to her.

When the spirits returned to Eden to report what had transpired, God was enraged. How dare they make this pact with Lilith -- who had rejected His rule over her -- and behind His back?

In Greek allegory, Lilith was known as Lamia, the beautiful queen of Libya, which was just west to Egypt and the Red Sea.

Lilith is often considered the "first feminist", as a result of this rabbinic myth.

Sincerely,
~LoE (LilithOfEden)
